Heritage Timber Windows, Doorsets & Internal Joinery for the Refurbishment of Morpeth Railway Station
This heritage joinery project showcases our expertise in manufacturing timber windows, timber doorsets, and internal timber components for listed buildings and historic restorations across the UK.
We were proud to support the restoration of one of the North East’s most historically significant transport buildings — the Grade II listed Morpeth Railway Station, originally built in 1847 and recognised as one of the finest surviving examples of Benjamin Green’s Jacobethan railway architecture.
All heritage windows, doorsets and internal timber joinery for this project were measured, manufactured and supplied by our sister company, Timbermate UK. (www.timbermateuk.co.uk).

A Landmark Restoration for a Historic Station
Morpeth Railway Station has served passengers since the Victorian era and is regarded as the last operating mainline station on the East Coast Main Line still open to the public. However, decades of water ingress, structural deterioration and rising damp had caused extensive damage to the building.
In 2020, following a multi‑year redevelopment led by The Greater Morpeth Development Trust, the station was transformed into a modern transport hub with new business workspace — all while preserving its architectural heritage.
The Trust spent seven years securing over £2.3 million in funding from organisations including:
-
Heritage Lottery Fund
-
Homes & Communities Agency
-
CORE
-
Northumberland County Council
-
Architectural Heritage Fund
Their goal was clear: retain the station’s original character while delivering 21st‑century facilities.
Our Contribution: Heritage Timber Windows, Doorsets & Internal Joinery
Working on a Grade II listed building demands accuracy, sensitivity and a deep understanding of traditional joinery. Our scope included:
-
Full site measurement of all heritage openings
-
Manufacture of bespoke single‑glazed timber windows
-
Traditional putty pointing to match the original 1847 appearance
-
Manufacture of heritage timber doorsets
-
Internal timber screens and skirting boards
-
Factory finishing for long‑lasting protection
-
Heritage‑appropriate profiles approved by conservation officers
Every item was crafted to replicate the original design as closely as possible, ensuring the restored station retained its authentic Victorian character.
A Complex Restoration Environment
The contractor’s team worked in extremely challenging conditions:
-
Trackside on the live East Coast Main Line, with high‑speed trains passing throughout the day
-
Night‑time and weekend work to allow safe scaffolding assembly when power to the lines could be isolated
-
Structural repairs, including replacing undersized beams and levelling sloping platforms
-
Rebuilding the Victorian portico, reinstating the station’s original entrance
Despite the complexity, the project was completed with exceptional attention to detail, preserving the building’s heritage while improving accessibility and functionality.
A Successful Transformation for the Community
The refurbished station now provides:
-
A restored historic entrance
-
Modern passenger facilities
-
Improved accessibility
-
New office space for six local businesses
The result is a building that once again serves the people of Morpeth — both as a transport hub and as a piece of living architectural history.
We’re proud that our heritage windows, doorsets and internal joinery played a part in bringing this important landmark back to life.
